"Peacekeepers ensure that refugees and displaced persons can return to their homes; that ex-combatants are disarmed and reintegrated into society; that children are taken off the battlefield and sent to school; that people exercise their right to vote in democratic elections; that individuals human rights are protected, not violated, by police forces and judicial systems; and that fields and forests are demined so that they can be used to sustain life instead of trigger death. "

.. UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the General Assembly, (UN Resolution 36/67) which called for people around the world to use the Day as an opportunity to promote the resolution of conflict and to observe a cessation of hostilities during it. There are places where peace has been restored, much of this has happened with the help of the United Nations.
For example, the people of Sierra Leone and Nepal have voted in democratic elections following years of conflict, and societies are rebuilding in Burundi, Liberia and Timor-Leste.
“These experiences show us that real peace is possible, if we work collectively to make it happen...take this day of ceasefire and non-violence very seriously...
.On 21 September, let us send a real signal of our universal desire for peace” .. Ban Ki-moon
