Unite to End Violence against Women

 

At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime — with the abuser usually someone known to her. Violence against women and girls is a universal problem of pandemic proportions [ + more ]

 

International Day of Peace

"Peacekeepers ensure that refugees and displaced persons can return to their homes; that ex-combatants are disarmed and reintegrated into society; that children are taken off the battlefield and sent to school; that people exercise their right to vote in democratic elections; that individuals human rights are protected, not violated, by police forces and judicial systems; and that fields and forests are demined so that they can be used to sustain life instead of trigger death. Millennium Campaign

This year marks the mid-point to the 2015 deadline for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With so little time and still so much to do, the Millennium Campaign sees the midpoint as an opportunity to reenergize efforts to be a key motivator in keeping up the pressure and ensuring that the Goals are achieved. 

 

 

The Billion Tree Campaign

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a major worldwide tree planting campaign. Under the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign , people, communities, business and industry, civil society organizations and governments are encouraged to enter tree planting pledges online with the objective of planting at least one billion trees worldwide during 2007. The UN Works Programme is a promotional strategy that focuses on how the United Nations system and its public and private sector partners work together to make a difference in the lives of ordinary people. The campaign features stories of men, women and children from around the world that have benefited from the work of the United Nations, highlighting people who are building lives that balance economic growth, environmental protection and social protection.

Millennium Development Goals

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are goals embraced by world leaders in the Millennium Summit of September 2000. The MDGs include a series of time-bound and quantifiable targets ranging from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015.
